Sustaining A Disciple Making Culture In Today’s Environment

Recently, I had the privilege of recording a series of conversations with the San Antonio Baptist Association.  Frank Jackson and Dr. Rowland Lopez lead the discussion with Greg Ogden and myself. We share our experiences and thoughts on navigating challenges and the implications of a disciple-making process in a local church.  We also discuss how to sustain a disciple-making culture.

Greg Ogden has 24 years of experience in pastoral ministry. He has authored several books on disciple-making including Discipleship Essentials, a guide to building your life in Christ, which has over 300,000 copies in print. He is also a partner in the Global Discipleship Initiative that trains coaches and encourages pastors and Christian leaders to establish disciple-making networks.

“So really we just began with a couple of key leaders and in my preaching, I would talk about hearing from the Lord or what God spoke to me out of the Word. A couple of leaders were intrigued by that and so I said, ‘well why don’t you just meet with me and I’ll show you what I know.’ I just started meeting with them, and I didn’t say, ‘I want to disciple you.’ I didn’t make it really that formal. It was kind of a ‘come and follow me’ kind of thing. So I started investing in these men, and they started investing in others and investing in others and so that’s really how it worked. You know Jesus talks about the kingdom of God advancing like leaven through the dough, and I really think that that is more of an organic approach to disciple-making….”
