Why people get stuck at a spiritual crossroads
As you do your part to reach your world, you’ll notice a common pattern. Many people that you’ll talk with, maybe even some of the people on your “Top Five List,” will experience indecision. Sometimes, they’ll get stuck because they know that Jesus will change some things in their lives and they’re not sure they’re ready for that. Other times, they’ll get stuck because of social reasons. They wonder what their friends or family will say if they start to follow Jesus.
Understanding the red light, yellow light, and green light moments
Think of this situation like a traffic light. When a traffic light is red, you’re supposed to stop. When it’s green, you’re supposed to go. If you’re sharing the gospel with someone and they tell you that they’re not interested, that’s a “red light” moment. Stop sharing with them. On the other hand, if someone is curious and engaged with what you’re saying, that’s a “green light” moment. Keep sharing with them.
What about a person who says, “Maybe later, but not now”? That’s a “yellow light” moment. At that point, the key is to keep the conversation lines open and help the person discover more about Jesus in the days ahead.
Helping someone move forward when they are unsure
When you encounter a “yellow light” moment, you might say something like,
“I understand that you aren’t sure about following Jesus right now. It’s a big decision, and I’m glad you’re taking it seriously. I have a small booklet called the ‘Explore Study’ that you might be interested in. It’s a short, 21-day introduction to Jesus through the Gospel of John. Would you be willing to invest the next twenty-one days to discover more about Jesus?”
Why God’s Word is the key to overcoming indecision
This response is helpful because when someone is stuck at a “yellow light” moment, they need God’s Word and thoughtful answers to their questions. Without those things, they might remain in the place of indecision indefinitely.
As they read Scripture, God’s power will begin to work in their hearts. Isaiah 55.11 NLT says, “It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.” As they receive credible answers to their questions, roadblocks will be removed, and they’ll be compelled to make a decision about Jesus.
Recognizing when someone is ready to explore more
If the person is open to going through the “Explore Study” with you, it’s a sign that they’re still interested in the possibility of following Jesus. If they aren’t interested, they might really be giving you a “red light” in that moment, but they don’t want to hurt your feelings.
Either way, your offer to help them explore more about Jesus will help them get unstuck.
Trusting the Holy Spirit throughout the process
Remember that the Holy Spirit is at work through the entire process. If the Spirit isn’t moving them to explore more about Jesus, then it would be fruitless to keep trying in that moment. Ultimately, it’s the Spirit’s job to draw people to Christ John 6.44 ESV. You’re just there to point them in the right direction at the right time.
